Sponsored Schemes

As well as projects that we are directly involved in, we also support pro bono schemes run by third parties. We currently sponsor/support four such schemes. All the schemes listed below are interested in hearing from potential sponsors:

Amicus

National Pro Bono Centre

University of Leicester

University of Portsmouth

Amicus

Amicus is a charity assisting lawyers in the United States of America to provide pro bono legal representation for those awaiting capital trial and punishment in the United States of America where there are concerns about the fairness of their trial. Anybody interested in their work can join the Amicus group on facebook (click here) and can also keep up to date with what's happening via their weblog at www.amicus-alj.blogspot.com. We support Amicus by publising its work, encouraging paralegals to do volunteer work for it and by providing professional recognition and benefits for their paralegal volunteers. For more information click here.

The National Pro Bono Centre

The Institute is a proud sponsor of the National Pro Bono Centre, which houses the legal profession's national clearing houses for legal pro bono work delivered in England and Wales: the Bar Pro Bono Unit, LawWorks (the Solicitors' Pro Bono Group) and ILEX Pro Bono Forum. The Centre is designed to be a "hub" for pro bono charities in the sector and will support the wide range of pro bono projects and brokerage which the charities support, helping individuals and community groups all over England and Wales.

The Law School at the University of Portsmouth

The Law School runs an innovative programme for its undergraduate law students. As part of their undergraduate studies they can opt to train as Citizens Advice Burea volunteer advisors. The programe gives them practical law training and considerable experience of advising in real-life situations. We recognise this by awarding an IOP Certifcate in Advisory Practice to those students successfully completing the programme. The Law School also runs a Street Law Project and an Innocence Project.

The University of Leicester Pro Bono Group

The Pro Bono Group is a sub-committee of the University's Student Law Society and provides two pro bono opportunities to its law students:

a) To staff a free legal advice clinic

b) To participate in "Innocence Projects". The projects handle the case of a convicted murderer who believes he/she is a victim of a miscarriage of justice and who has unsuccessfully exhausted the initial appeals process. These projects form part of the larger Innocence Network.

The Group (which does not have a website) can be contacted via
